Joe Chan Kiu Hong is the first artist we interviewed. His diverse career and academic background inspired him to adopt an unconventional approach with mixed media in his own practice. Using his work “Ming Jing” and “Mo Soeng” as examples, he takes the history of ceramics and the origin of raw materials into account. Not only did he embed new media in ceramics art, but he also conveys both the visible and invisible contexts of clay using the contemporary expression. With his open-minded attitude, he attempts to go beyond the boundary of traditional ceramics art, while retaining the characteristics of materiality. His works are thus the manifestations of enduring research and accumulated experience in studio experiments.

During the interview, he mentioned the essence of ceramics: “Ceramics is one of the first materials mastered by humans since civilization. It contains an immense history in which many intriguing stories could be explored…”
